New (Again) Website
January 4, 2022
Welcome!
Welcome to my new personal website! As the title of this page might suggest, yes, this is not the first time I've created a personal site. This is probably my fourth time creating a site for my own personal use. The main issue I have is content.
Content?
I am a developer not a writer. So, where am I going to come up with things to add to my site? What do I even want to be on my site? All of these questions come I am not sure I can answer, at least not consistently.
As a web developer it seemed like I should have a website. I mean who wants to learn golf from someone who doesn't even own a set of clubs? This means that maybe some of my content should involve my skill set as a developer. So, expect some code posts on my site.
Some other content that may appear here could be any of my interests. As I am growing and living life my interests come and go. Maybe I want to write about something from my past that I was into then, or maybe I want to write about a newly found interest that I just discovered. Regardless, this is just a typical blog site, except now I am the sole writer. Hopefully we share at least one shared interest, and you will enjoy something about my site.
How did the site get here?
The first time I built out a personal site I wanted to do it by myself, including the server setup. I had a Raspberry Pi sitting around from an old college which was perfect for hosting a personal site, so that is what I did. I went even further and not only did I host my own static site, but I managed to cram a full blown Drupal site into a Raspberry Pi 3. This was the first year of my site.
Eventually, I moved my site from the small Pi which was struggling with the Composer commands because of the very limited RAM and onto an old dell desktop which I installed Debian on. This was the next year or so of my site. Nothing actually updated since the beginning other than the physical location.
The next year after having some problems with my desktop running reliably, I decided to update my site and move to somewhere more reliable, Netlify. The update was to practice my React skills. The move was very easy as it just consisted of making a github repo and updating my DNS to point to the Netlify servers.
Finally, we get to where the site is now (January 2022). Still being on Netlify, but now the repo is updated to run with Gatsby. There were a few style updates, but for the most part the site is what it was last year. The difference this time is that I will update the content (fingers crossed).
Yes, that is right. I am going to be committed to actually adding content to my site. No more "Blog - Coming Soon". So, here's to the new blog!
